Mission and Programs
Mission
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership, building houses with families in need.
Under the direction of the Board of Directors, HFHI retains complete control over the use and distribution of donated funds in furtherance of its mission.
Programs
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
Habitat for Humanity's work is accomplished at the community level by affiliates -- independent, locally run, nonprofit organizations. Each affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in its local area -- fund raising, building site selection, partner family selection and nurturing, house construction and mortgage servicing.
Habitat for Humanity's new Cars for HomesTM vehicle donation program provides another way in which individuals can contribute to the local and global mission of Habitat while potentially qualifying for a tax deduction. In particular, net proceeds generated from donated cars, trucks, boats, RVs, motorcycles or other vehicles through this program are used by local affiliates and Habitat for Humanity International to build homes with low-income families within the community and throughout the world. Donors can indicate interest in donating vehicles by calling the Cars for HomesTM toll free telephone number, 1-877-277-HFHI (4344), or by visiting http://www.carsforhomes.org

Chief Executive Profile
Jonathan Reckford is the new CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. He comes from Christ Presbyterian Church of Edina, MN, where he served as executive pastor for two years. Jonathan grew up in North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a degree in political science. In 1984, he joined Goldman, Sachs. He was then awarded the Henry Luce Foundation Scholarship for Young American Leaders. With that, he traveled to Korea to work with the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee, working on marketing sponsorships and coaching the Korean national rowing team. Upon his return from Korea, he graduated from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto, Calif., with an MBA focused on public and nonprofit management, and joined Marriott's corporate strategy group. In 1991, he moved to Disney Design and Development, and then was named senior vice president of corporate planning and communications for Circuit City Stores, and then president of stores of the Musicland Group (which was subsequently acquired by Best Buy). Jonathan brings a wealth of for profit and non-profit management experience to his role as CEO of our organization.
Additional Comments
Whether in the US or overseas, families in need apply to local Habitat affiliates. The affiliate's family selection committee considers applicants' level of need, their willingness to become partners in the Habitat program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan. Every affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing Habitat homeowner families.

Balance
Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2008
Notes
The
balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization
at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should
generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive,
but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered.
For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables,
securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities
(payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments).
Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other
hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed
its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
