Mission and Programs
Mission
Chartered in 1888, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA) is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in the state, and third oldest in the country providing care and basic medical services for approximately 11,000 animals each year.
For over 120 years, the LA/SPCA has served the needs of the people and animals in our community and surrounding region. The mission of the LA/SPCA is to advocate for and protect the animal community through high quality service, compassion, strong leadership and innovative programs.
Programs
Our programs and services include: adoption, sheltering and care for homeless and neglected animals; animal control and humane law enforcement of city and state animal laws; cruelty and neglect investigation; animal rescue; animal information and referral; humane education programs; community outreach; lost & found; obedience training; disaster preparedness and lobbying and advocating for strong animal laws.

Results
Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending 12/31/2005
- Expanded our spay/neuter reach to surrounding parishes through our mobile spay/neuter center.
- Increased our adoption rate with foster care and off-site adoption events.
- Expanded our Show and Tail education series within the New Orleans School system.
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning 01/01/2006
- Rebuild our animal shelter, which was destroyed as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
- Develop model disaster response plans in cooperation with federal, state, and local partners.
- Reinstitute best practice operations at temporary shelter.
Self Assessment
We measure our success by the increased adoption rate, market research, increased memberships, growth in operating revenue, increased volunteer involvement.
Chief Executive Profile
Ana Zorrilla joined the team post-Katrina with ten years experience in program design, implementation, evaluation, and fundraising. At the LA/SPCA, Ana first was Director of Development, responsible for the annual fundraising, membership program, special events, and capital campaign. In 2007, Ana was promoted into the position of Chief Executive Office of the LA/SPCA. Prior to joining the LA/SPCA, Ana served as the Director of Summerbridge New Orleans, and she served as the Program Director at The Methodist Home for Children for two years. Ana is a native New Orleanian who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Loyola University with a B.A. in English and secondary education. She earned her M.Ed. in Administration at the University of New Orleans.
Additional Comments
The LA/SPCA is a best practice organization which led the charge for the country's largest animal rescue operation in history due to Hurricane Katrina's strike upon New Orleans. The LA/SPCA is New Orleans only animal shelter.
