Mission and Programs
Mission
United Animal Nations assists animals across the nation by helping to prevent, mitigate and resolve crises. We accomplish this by sharing expertise, resources and information to empower others to help more animals.
Programs
Through its volunteer-driven Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS), UAN shelters and cares for animals displaced by natural disasters and other crises, such as criminal seizures and hoarding cases, in the United States and Canada.
The LifeLine Grant Program provides funding to Good Samaritans, animal rescuers, non-profit organizations and pet owners to help them care for animals in life-threatening situations.
Through the Premarin Awareness Campaign, UAN educates women about hormone drugs made
from pregnant mares? urine (PMU) and helps people adopt the mares and foals cast off from this industry who might otherwise be at risk for slaughter.
UAN's Humane Education Ambassador Reader (HEAR) program helps children explore the human-animal bond through stories and discussion. HEAR volunteers visit elementary school classrooms, after-school programs, bookstores, animal shelters and other venues to read to children and lead discussions -- helping children develop critical thinking skills and empathy.

Results
Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending 12/31/2007
- Launched the Humane Education Ambassador Reader (HEAR) program, a one-of-a-kind visitor reader program designed to strike at the roots of animal cruelty and strengthen the human-animal bond. The HEAR program promotes discussion-based learning, literacy and critical thinking, and aligns with curriculum standards in the United States and Canada. UAN is piloting the HEAR program by training volunteers in Sacramento, California; Washington, DC; and Victoria, British Columbia.
- Issued more than $23,000 in emergency assistance grants to victims of wildfires that swept across Southern California in October 2007. The grants helped families with vet care for pets injured in the fires and temporary boarding while they were evacuated or finding new homes.
- Through the Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS), operated a temporary animal shelter in Pratt, Kansas, for animals displaced by a tornado that destroyed Greensburg, Kansas in May 2007. Forty-four EARS volunteers deployed to Pratt over 23 days, walking, feeding, comforting and reuniting more than 100 animals, and rescuing several dozen more who had been stranded in the tornado debris for more than one month.
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning 01/01/2008
- Increase the reach of our Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) disaster relief efforts and train new volunteers who are qualified to staff emergency shelters in the wake of natural disasters and other crises, and educate the public about the need to include animals in disaster planning.
- Promote the rescue and adoption of horses retired from the Premarin industry by aggressively marketing PMURescue.org, an online portal that links potential adopters to dozens of equine rescue organizations and hundreds of horses.
- Meet the growing demand for our Humane Education Ambassador Reader (HEAR) program by developing partnerships and identifying innovative ways to bring the program to local communities.
Self Assessment
UAN has a three-year Strategic Plan, plus a one-year operating plan, which is reviewed by the Board each November and expanded into the next year. We also have feedback from volunteers and our 35,000 plus members nationwide.

Balance
Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending December 31, 2007
Notes
The
balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization
at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should
generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive,
but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered.
For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables,
securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities
(payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments).
Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other
hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed
its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
