Mission and Programs
Mission
The mission of Catholic Charities USA is to exercise leadership in assisting its membership, particularly the diocesan Catholic Charities agencies and supporting group members, in their mission of service, advocacy and convening.
Programs
America relies on Catholic Charities (CC) to provide critical human services to people in need. As the nation's fourth largest social service provider, (CC) serves more than 7.8 million people of all faiths each year. Catholic Charities is even listed in the federal government's National Disaster Response Plan as one of 5 organizations relied on for providing food, shelter, emergency first aid, and to distribute emergency relief items during domestic disasters.

Results
Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending 12/31/2006
- Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), the National Member Service Center for Catholic Charities across the United States, provides leadership and support to enhance CC's work. In 2007 -- endorsed by the Catholic Charities network -- CCUSA launched a nationwide Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America. A key part of the campaign is empowering CC's clients to become economically self-sufficient. This nationwide movement is transforming the lives of millions of Americans every year. In 2007, the Catholic Charities movement served nearly one in every 8 people living in poverty within the United States.
- In conjunction with The Annie E. Casey Foundation, Catholic Charities USA launched the 2006 Family Strengthening Awards. The winners are three innovative programs that support healthy family relationships, improve a family's overall financial situation, and enhance the community where they live.
- In the public policy arena, Catholic Charities USA aggressively pursued its 2006 legislative agenda. Catholic Charities USA was proud to be able to achieve some success on all of its top priorities: affordable housing, Head Start, homelessness, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, immigration, and Medicaid.
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning 01/01/2007
- Catholic Charities USA launched a Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America. The campaign is a new multi-year initiative to cut poverty in half by 2020.
- Catholic Charities USA is developing Stop Human Trafficking of Children coalitions. The coalitions work to end human trafficking in their communities. They are convened by Catholic Charities agencies in areas where significant numbers of children are trafficked and sexually exploited for commercial gain.
- Catholic Charities USA will work to raise awareness about Catholic Charities, its values, and the wide variety of services provided by local agencies to more than 7 million people each year. Specifically, the plan is to appeal to the country's 60 million Catholics and create a stronger Catholic Charities brand. A stronger brand will help to boost name recognition, increase awareness and create an environment of support for Catholic Charities.
Self Assessment
In order to remain faithful to their mission, all organizational members of Catholic Charities USA are guided by a common set of ethical norms. Their purpose is to assure that each member organization is a moral agent and that it carries out its moral responsibility as a corporate entity, which is essentially to carry out the social mission of the Church. These principles are concerned with the application of rightness, goodness, and obligation to the decisions which determine policy, procedure, and practice as well as internal and external relationships, within the context of an agency's responsibility for carrying out the social mission of the Church. The sources of these principles are found in the Scriptures, papal encyclicals, synodal and other documents that accompanied or followed Vatican II, Canon Law, the statements of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of the United States that are relevant to the social mission, charisms of religious communities serving in the Church's social mission, and the policy statements of Catholic Charities USA.
Chief Executive Profile
In February 2005, Father Larry Snyder took the helm of Catholic Charities USA. As president, Father Snyder is responsible for the overall direction of the Catholic Charities movement and the administration of Catholic Charities USA located in Alexandria, VA. He also serves as chief spokesperson for the organization and maintains key relationships with Catholic and other national and governmental groups.
Additional Comments
Working to reduce and eliminate poverty, support families, and empower communities, Catholic Charities across the nation provided help and created hope for 7,449,119 (unduplicated) people in 2005. In all, 173 main Catholic Charities agencies and their 1,500 branches and affiliates provided vital, community-based services 12,643,199 times. Catholic Charities USA bolsters their work and represents the Catholic community in times of domestic disaster.
