Mission and Programs

Mission

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Programs

Blood is needed for emergencies and for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell, anemia and other illnesses. Some people need regular blood transfusions to live.

Imagine if giving blood was part of everyone's life. Something you did on a regular basis, like eating at your favorite restaurant. What kind of difference would that make? For nearly 5 million people who receive blood transfusions every year, your donation can make the difference between life and death.

  1. Through our vast network of hundreds of thousands of dedicated volunteers, more than 700 chapters and 36 blood regions in fiscal year 2007, your Red Cross was given the extraordinary privilege of serving the urgnet needs of your neighbors...some of whom were directly affected by more than 72,000 domestic disasters. The Red Cross was priviliged to provide more than six million units of blood to hospitals and clinics across the U.S.
  2. The Red Cross was honored to ensure that the heroic men and women of our Armed Forces stayed in touch with family and friends thousands of miles away during times of emergency as more than 648,000 emergency messages were relayed. The Red Cross was privileged to teach lifesaving CPR, first aid education, water safety and disaster preparedness courses to millions of Americans to ensure that they have the power to save a life with their skills.
  3. Internationally, the American Red Cross responded to more than 20 crises and has worked with partner Red Cross and Red Crescent societies and other non-governmental organizations to facilitate measles immunizations campaigns and improve national health services in 50 developing countries.
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning 07/01/2007

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2008

Notes
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
