Mission
From assisting hurricane survivors to combating substance abuse, The Salvation Army serves the needs of more than 35 million people nationwide each year - helping more people in more ways than any other national charity.
Programs
A 127-year old, faith-based charity, The Salvation Army helps people with all kinds of needs in virtually every community across America. Some of these activities include operating Adult Rehabilitation Centers, running programs for children and seniors and providing emergency disaster services support.

Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending 12/31/2006
- The Salvation Army provided substance abuse treatment and medical care for more than 200,000 people in 2006.
- The Salvation Army provided disaster assistance support for nearly 2.7 million Americans in 2006; including long-term assistance and relief for Gulf Coast hurricane survivors.
- The Salvation Army has 8,500 centers of operation in the United States, allowing them to provide service in virtually every zip code in the country.

Chief Executive Profile
Appointed in May, 2006 as the first African-American national leader in the organization's history, Commissioner Gaither is firmly committed to the Mission of The Salvation Army - serving others in His name without discrimination. Commissioner Gaither has extensive leadership experience, alongside his wife Eva, in The Salvation Army both in the United States and overseas. Prior to his appointment as National Commander, Commissioner Gaither served as Chief of Staff at The Salvation Army International Headquarters in London, England. As the organization?s chief executive officer, the Commissioner served as second-in-command of the worldwide organization, traveling to more than 30 countries through more than 50 visits to Salvation Army territories around the globe.
