Mission

UMCOR aims to foster a society that meets basic needs, allows for the full participation of its members, and promotes the peaceful coexistence of all races, ethnic groups, and religions. Developing a community''s ability to build its capacity and to become self-sustaining is one of the primary measures by which UMCOR determines a project''s worth.

Programs

Hurricane Long Term Recovery: The United Methodist Committee on Relief is rebuilding families--providing long-term recovery assistance to tens of thousands of evacuees and survivors of 2005's hurricane season. We bring help close to home in our methodology of case management, individual family recovery plans, and services people need, all directed toward regaining self-sufficiency.
Other Programs: UMCOR is currently responding in the Middle East, rebuilding homes in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, ensuring food security in Congo and the Sudan.

Results

Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending 12/31/2005

  1. Rebuilt homes and infrastructure in Indonesia and Sri Lanka for tsunami survivors.
  2. Responded aggressively to the HIV-AIDS pandemic in Africa and Eastern Europe through services to orphans, distribution of hygiene kits, educational and psycho-social programs.
  3. Delivered $7.8 million in relief supplies to survivors of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Dennis and Stan.
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning 01/01/2006
  1. TSUNAMI RECOVERY: Continue to proactively respond to the dire needs of tsunami survivors, including livelihoods, restoration of homes, replacement of fishing gear, and debris clearing.
  2. HURRICANE RECOVERY: Robust program for long-term recovery in the Gulf States, serving 30,000 to 50,000 families in a two to three year program.
Self Assessment

All project grantees submit proposals and reports which are evaluated annually. A total assessment and decision about continuation, disbandment, or initiation is made. NGO and administrative and program personnel are reviewed annually through a uniform assessment system.

Chief Executive Profile

Mr. Dirdak is an expert in the complexities of global humanitarian response, in church structure and polity. He has been a United Methodist pastor since 1974, having served parishes in rural and urban California.
Mr. Dirdak was educated at the Univ. of CA, Santa Barbara, and Pacific School of Religion. He has held positions of leadership at the annual conference and national levels of the denomination. He is a well-known keynoter in the denomination and beyond. He has conducted conferences on HIV/AIDS in India and Zimbabwe.

Additional Comments

UMCOR has grown significantly in the last 10 years. It has earned a reputation for expertise in camp management, DRRR, restoration of homes, immigrant rights, sustainable agriculture. Annual audits have been very clean and expenditures in recent years have been slightly less than income received.
