Mission and Programs

Mission

The Children’s Health Fund (CHF) is committed to providing health care to the nation’s most medically underserved children and their families through the development and support of innovative primary care medical programs, response to public health crises, and the promotion of guaranteed access to appropriate health care for all children. Through our unique mobile medical units and fixed-site clinics, we offer a “medical home” to thousands of homeless and low-income children and their families across the United States each year.

Programs

Children’s Health Fund (CHF) develops and supports a National Network of 22 programs and two affiliates in 15 different states and the District of Columbia. Seventeen of the programs/affiliates are based at academic medical centers, the other seven at Federally Qualified Health Centers.

Programs provide comprehensive health care through an enhanced medical home model to medically underserved children. This model integrates intensive primary care, mental health and oral health services through innovative practices, such as the use of mobile clinics, school-based clinics and telehealth.

Affiliates incorporate one of CHF’s special initiatives into their practice in order to fulfill the goal of providing an enhanced medical home. Special Initiatives include: the Referral Management Initiative (RMI), the Childhood Asthma Initiative, the Transportation Initiative, Medical Home Initiative and Starting Right (Obesity Prevention).

Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending 12/31/2007

  1. In 2008, the National Network added its 22nd project - the Southern Arizona. And several CHF initiatives were replicated within the network including the Childhood Asthma Initiative, and the Referral Management Initiative.
  2. CHF continues to advocate on behalf of the millions of American children who still do not have access to a medical home.
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning 01/01/2008
  1. Expand CHF National Network and sustain this national effort, including enhanced capacity to respond to disasters.
  2. Replicate Special Health Initiatives throughout CHF's National Network and beyond.
  3. Raise public awareness and work with policy makers, medical providers, educators, and the business sector to ensure that the best possible health care is being delivered to every child across America.
Self Assessment

CHF's creative success in serving disadvantaged children is rooted in highly accepted approaches to pediatric care. The goal is a "medical home" for each patient. We also forge strong affiliations with academic medical centers to ensure children receive quality care.

Also, through the Community-Based Centers of Excellence Initiative CHF expands access to comprehensive, culturally sensitive health care for underserved populations and creates effective programs in response to clinical challenges, through innovative interventions, staff enhancements, program evaluation, and measurable outcomes management. CHF both redefines the primary care model and serves as a health services model for community health centers across the country.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending December 31, 2007

Notes
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
