Mission and Programs

Mission

The mission of the ASPCA, as stated by our founder, Henry Bergh, is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.

Programs

To effectively address the challenges that animals face each day, the ASPCA operates in three core program areas:

ANTI-CRUELTY advances the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of animal cruelty. Its programs include: Field Services, Government Relations and Humane Law Enforcement. 2008 highlights: held over 130 lectures and trainings; were involved in over 220 cruelty cases; conducted close to 340 investigations; testified at 12 cruelty trials; helped write two Pennsylvania House Bills to prohibit some of the worst abuses in commercial dog kennels and strengthen enforcement of the state’s animal cruelty law.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH focuses on increasing the number of homeless animals saved and improving the treatment of animals in our communities. Its programs include: Onyx and Breezy Shefts Adoption Center, ASPCA® Mission: Orange™, ASPCA® Meet Your Match™, ASPCAPro.org, Humane Education and Disaster Readiness. 2008 highlights: placed over 3,200 dogs and cats in homes; assisted in pre- and post-storm evacuation and sheltering during hurricanes Gustav and Ike; partnered with DoSomething.org to launch an online resource for young people who care about animals; opened an indoor dog park, "Monster Park", for our shelter dogs in our NYC headquarters.

ANIMAL HEALTH SERVICES provides affordable, high-quality veterinary care, animal behavior programs and veterinary education. Its programs include: Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics, Animal Poison Control Center, Animal Behavior Center, Grief Counseling and Veterinary Outreach. 2008 highlights: assisted with close to 147,000 suspected animal poisoning cases throughout the country; treated close to 11,700 animals at the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital (BMAH); introduced high-volume spay/neuter clinics for feral cats at BMAH on the second Sunday of each month where we fixed over 400 cats between September and December; performed 23,223 spay/neuter surgeries overall through our mobile spay/neuter clinics.

Chief Executive Profile

Mr. Sayres became the sixteenth President of the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) in 2003. Before joining the ASPCA, Mr. Sayres was the President of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (The SF/SPCA), a “no-kill” shelter and model for animal shelters across the country. He led the SF/SPCA partnership with San Francisco Animal Care and Control, a pioneering alliance that has reduced euthanasia, increased the area’s save rate, and reduced the number of dogs and cats at risk in San Francisco. Prior to joining The SF/SPCA in 1998, Mr. Sayres was the Director of PETsMart Charities, where he administered the Grants Program and distributed millions of dollars in awards to local humane societies. He served as President of St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center for 14 years, where he created the largest humane society-based dog training facility in the country. Mr. Sayres is the founder and first President of the Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey, an alliance of 115 groups that worked together under his leadership to advocate for animal welfare state-wide. Mr. Sayres received his Master’s degree in Psychology from Sonoma State University.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending December 31, 2007

Notes
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
