In Cambodia, few rural villages have the money to adequately staff or support quality secondary schools, so attending secondary school typically means traveling long distances or staying away from home, which is not acceptable for girls in Cambodian culture. Boys have the option to stay in nearby pagodas, but there are no similar housing opportunities for girls. As a result, adult literacy rates in Cambodia are significantly higher for men (82.9%) than for women (61.1%). Currently, more than one in three persons over 25 years of age has not attended school and, of these, 73 percent are women. Yet Cambodian boys and girls start on equal footing in school. They have roughly similar school enrollment rate up to age 10, but then girls start falling behind boys in school enrollment. Grades 4 and 5 see very high dropout rates for girls. As education level increases, enrollment rates of girls decrease. By age 15, male enrollment is 50 percent higher, and by age 18 male enrollment rates are nearly three times as large as female enrollment rates. CASF was founded in response to these statistics!
